This exhibition is an interactive, hands-on exploration into the history of Maitland and its surrounding areas! There were a lot of things that did not happen in Maitland. There were no great battles fought on the soil, nor was it home to any infamous individuals. The town was not the epicenter of any great social movements, nor was it home to discoveries that would better humankind. Maitland was, and continues to be, a small town, like so many others.The story of Maitland is a story of seemingly ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times, a place where people made their homes while dramatic events unfolded in other parts of the world. People labored here, raised their families, loved, lost, thought, and created. The objects in the museum's collection reflect the brightness of these lives against the backdrop of a changing and often troubled world.Each artifact tells a story specific to a place and time. They are the carriers of the memories of the people who owned them, who felt that they were important enough to their own story to preserve them. Many of them are the prototypes of the objects that we use and hold dear today, objects which will one day carry our own memories forward.Welcome to Maitland's Attic, a gathering place of the unique items that tell of Maitland's past. About the Exhibition "Ours is the wide-open mind with gusts of ideas blowing through it and demanding manifestation." Drawing inspiration from Jules André Smith's 1939 essay, "An Insanitorium of Art," US embraces Smith's vision of an artistic practice rooted in inquiry and intellectual openness, and examines how generations of artists have engaged with the Art Center as a site for creative exploration. The exhibition brings together works by six Bok Fellows from the 1930s and 40s, artists who spent their winters working at the Center, alongside selections by Smith himself. Named in honor of Mary Curtis Bok, whose support was instrumental to the establishment of the Art Center, these historical artists' works are presented in dialogue with works by nine of our contemporary resident artists, the intellectual and artistic heirs of Smith's Bok Fellows program. Ambar Santiago makes her exhibition debut at CityArtsâ SIDE Gallery with âGuatemala: MyPlace of Trees.â Through fluorescently powerful color and dense layers of overgrown plants,Santiago confronts the complicated experience of growing up in the United States while feelingseparated from her Central American and Caribbean heritage. âGuatemala: My Place of Treesâ speaks to anyone who has ever felt too disconnected from theirheritage to fully claim it, but too connected to ever let it go. Rather than presenting Guatemalaas somewhere familiar, Santiago constructs her own imagined landscape, a psychological mapbuilt from longing and cultural displacement. Her work transforms the tropical plant into a symbolof the search for roots, which is something that can nurture, protect, consume, and ultimatelybecome impossible to escape. At its heart, this debut exhibition asks what it means to create a homeland inside your ownimagination when the real one feels just out of reach. âGuatemala: My Place of Treesâ is areminder that sometimes the landscape we make to find ourselves can become the very thingthat swallows us whole. In the last six months, Ambar Santiago has risen to prominence in Orlando through heradvocacy for women artists. Because of this advocacy, she won WOMEN OF IMPACT in theArts â Rising Star, presented by Nosotras Latinas Magazine and Mujer Emprendre. She also had the great honor of being invited by her alma mater UCF in April 2026, to talk abouther advocacy for womenâs rights in the arts. Ambar and her team at Mills Gallery talked to theUCF students for two hours and shared their views about the art world and artists. The eventwas introduced by Representative Anna Eskamani, which showed the cityâs support.Ambar Santiago also recently curated her very first Exhibition titled âOpposites Attractâ, in March2026, featuring Liamel Cohen and Genna Sweetnam. Proof of Life is a visual record of one year in the life of a full time artist. The ups and downs, and the good and the bad. Being honest about what it felt like and what struggles, sacrifices, vulnerability come with becoming a professional artist. Through surreal graphite portraits, each piece represents a different stage of the journey, reflecting the internal battles and personal discoveries that happen behind the scenes. This exhibition is evidence that I was here and that I kept creating, despite everything this first year threw at me. I pushed through to become the artist I am today and will continue to be. This collection is a full story to follow from the first piece to the last. So take in each piece from beginning to end to truly put yourself in my shoes. About Angelo the Artiste Angelo the Artiste is a 31 year old self taught artist whose journey began with a pencil and a deep curiosity for expression. With over 16 years of dedication to art, Angelo has honed his craft through persistence, experimentation, and an unwavering passion for visual storytelling. In 2024, he officially stepped into the professional art world, turning years of personal practice into a full-time creative pursuit. Working primarily in black and white, Angelo is known for his surreal portraits that blend realism with imagination. His pieces often explore emotion, identity, and dreamlike perspectives, using fine detail and contrast to bring striking visions to life on paper. Tai Chi Chuan or tai chi, pronounced "tie chee," is a gentle exercise program that is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Tai Chi is derived from the martial arts and is composed of slow deliberate movements, meditation, and deep breathing which enhance physical health and emotional well-being. Benefits Tai Chi improves balance, agility, strength, flexibility, stamina, muscle tone, pain and coordination. This low-impact, weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and can slow bone loss, thus preventing the development of osteoporosis.

No drawing experience is required! Open to all levels. Automatic drawing is a technique named by and commonly used by the Surrealists, which involves the artist directly and randomly moving the pen or drawing tool with no preconceived image or plan. This technique is similar to what writers termed "Stream of consciousness" writing, where, through a mental shift, drawing automatically allows participants to let their subconscious flow through their hands. Participants will be encouraged to draw their hearts' content out and learn to unshackle themselves from hesitation caused by the anxiety of being confronted by a blank sheet. Students will create many drawings using many different materials to get them out of their heads and out of their comfort zones. Students will learn about processes like automatism, frottage, and responsive drawing. The drawing doesn't ever have to be quote-on-quote finished it can be left as a single deposit of personal memory. There is no right or wrong way to practice automatic drawing. Register Here!

Orlando Story Club is a live storytelling competition that takes place at CityArts Orlando (39 S Magnolia Ave).
