Katherine Figueroa REALTOR Florida & Puerto Rico

There's a quiet myth that still lingers in real estate circles—even in 2025: that homeownership is a goal best suited for couples or families. That it's rare, risky, or even unrealistic for a single woman to buy a home, especially early in life. But I'm living proof that not only is it possible—it's powerful.

In the early 1990s, I bought my first home at the age of 21. Not only that—I purchased a property that belonged to the manager of the mortgage lending institution where I worked at the time. I was a single woman, ambitious and determined, working in the financial side of the business and soaking up every bit of knowledge I could. Back then, the idea raised eyebrows. I heard all the familiar questions:

"Why don't you wait until you get married?"
"Isn't that too much responsibility?"
"Don't you want to travel first?"

But none of those questions ever outweighed the one I kept asking myself: What am I waiting for?

Buying that first home changed my life. It taught me about budgeting, equity, risk, growth, and—most importantly—confidence. It also laid the foundation for what would become a 30+ year career helping others do the same. Today, as a multilingual luxury real estate broker in Florida and Puerto Rico, I've helped hundreds of buyers—including many single women—make empowered, strategic real estate decisions.

And I'm not alone. In fact, according to recent NAR research, single women have consistently made up the second-largest group of homebuyers—behind only married couples. They outpace single men year after year. These women aren't waiting. They're investing. They're building wealth. They're planting roots on their own terms.

So, if you're a single woman wondering whether you "should" buy a home, here's my message to you:

You absolutely can.
You absolutely should—if it's right for you.
And you don't need anyone's permission to build the life and legacy you deserve.

The myth is outdated. The numbers speak for themselves. And women like you—and like I was at 21—are rewriting the story of homeownership every single day.

Let's talk if you're ready to start yours.
